David Awoleye

David Awoleye is a contemporary visual artist based in Lagos, Nigeria, his practice is rooted in mixed media and draws inspiration from artists across various disciplines. An art enthusiast since middle school, he developed a strong passion for experimental techniques early on. Largely self-taught in his mixed-media approach, he explores textures and materials such as Ankara (a popular African fabric), shoelaces, textile liners, and beads to create vibrant and deeply textured works.
His artworks are often inspired by culture, personal memories, and lived experiences. David creates in solitude, often accompanied by music, which helps him connect emotionally with his work and stay in flow. He views his creative process as both meditative and expressive.
In his words "After completing my education and service year, I dedicated myself fully to my studio practice. Much of my work is personal a testament to resilience and the pursuit of hope in adversity. My art doesn’t only aim to be visually appealing, but also serves as a catalyst for dialogue. Through abstract and figurative compositions, I invite viewers into interpretive and subjective experiences. This approach helps me depict reality in its layered, emotional, and often complex form."
