MOTHERland is a deep journey into the heart of what truly defines us: the enduring power of motherhood. This solo exhibition by Siyambonga Magwentshu, known as Siya, is an emotional tribute to the women who are the silent architects of our lives, the unshakable cornerstones of our individual stories and shared heritage. Through seven deeply personal paintings, Siya invites us to honor the mothers who shape our homes, preserve our cultures, and keep the flame of memory burning bright across generations.

Siya's artistic vision is deeply rooted in his own experience, growing up in the loving care of a single mother. This foundation infuses his work with an intimate understanding of maternal strength and unconditional love.

Within this touching collection, we find narratives that are both intimately familiar and universally meaningful. Take, for instance, "5pm," a painting that surpasses a mere scene to become a portal to the past. Siya describes it as a cherished memory of his childhood, a time when the appeal of DragonBall Z often gave in to the exhaustion of a long school day. His mother, ever patient, would watch the episodes he missed, her gentle laughter echoing as she recounted the adventures he'd slept through. "It wasn’t just about the cartoon," Siya shares, "it was about the shared time, the unspoken bond forged in those quiet moments."
