WOMAN
by David Awoleye
In a world that often scrutinises and sometimes undervalues the contributions of Black and African women, David Awoleye’s current body of work, 'WOMAN', stands as a powerful and unapologetic tribute. Inspired by their unwavering strength, the artist uses each canvas as a platform to honour and celebrate the full spectrum of womanhood.
It celebrates their fundamental roles as nurturers, protectors, and pillars of our communities. Each painting is crafted with the vibrant self-expression of traditional Ankara fabrics to dress them in their heritage, with charcoal often used to symbolise the fundamental earthy and powerful essence of the women being depicted and fire to portray that the women and their stories are not just painted but forged and refined into a transformative process.
The collection is a visual declaration that the achievements, traditions, and very existence of African women are not just worthy of recognition but are a source of immeasurable light and strength. 'WOMAN' is an invitation to see their power, honour their wisdom, and celebrate their traditions.
